Using L1

Today’s tip:

Allow your students to use their first language (usually Spanish) in the classroom.  Our goal is for them to master the concept in science or history or computer applications.  If it helps them to process the material in Spanish, that’s OK – once the concept is mastered, it’s an easy transfer over to English.  You are also showing that you respect them and their language, an important aspect of Culturally Responsive Teaching.
